A Uvalde, Texas, School District Suspended from the Police Department in the Light of the May 24 Mass Shooting at Robb Elementary School

HOUSTON — The school district in Uvalde, Texas, said on Friday that it had suspended the operations of its Police Department amid ongoing questions about its officers’ response to the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School and a sustained protest by victims’ parents.

Pete Arredondo, the chief of the department, was terminated by the district because he delayed confronting the shooter for over an hour after the shooting started. Nineteen people, including two teachers, were killed by a man.

The officer who took over for Mr. Arredondo was put on administrative leave by the school district. The director of student services will retire, according to the statement.

Harrell had also emailed staff to inform of his plan to retire, saying, “I am in my 31st year in education, all served and dedicated to the students and families here in Uvalde.”

Harrell had announced last week he’d step aside amid continued backlash over the way officials and law enforcement responded to the massacre at Robb Elementary School in May, when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire and slaughtered 19 children and two teachers.

Since the tragedy, families of the victims have demanded greater accountability from officials in the aftermath of the shooting, and some Uvalde parents have been calling for the Superintendent’s removal for months.

After they learned that the people killed in the school were shot in two adjoining classrooms and that police stood in the hallway, their anger grew even bigger.

The sister of the slain teacher demanded that the board step down and that the principals and vice principals be removed from their positions.

It has been criticized that law enforcement was too slow in responding to the shooting, contrary to a widely taught procedure for active shooter situations.

Several officers arrived at the scene of the Robb Elementary shooting minutes later after a man entered the school and began firing. They retreated to a hallway after being shot by the man and had to wait 77 minutes for a tactical unit to arrive and kill the man.

Earlier this month, CNN reported the Uvalde school district had recently hired a former Texas Department of Public Safety trooper under investigation for her response to the massacre.

One of the first officers to arrive on the shooting scene was talking to a colleague who asked if she had children at the school.

The principal of Richneck Elementary School in Virginia has been reassigned within Newport News Public Schools, according to a spokesperson for the district.

The school district and leadership have come under fire in the weeks since a first graders allegedly shot a teacher inside a Rich neck classroom on January 6 and students are due to resume classes for the first time on Monday.

Richneck Elementary has been closed since the shooting, and some parents have expressed their concern ahead of classes resuming. The father of a student accused of shooting Zwerner last week told CNN that he has been distraught since the shooting.

Karen Lynch will serve as the administrator on special assignment “leading the Richneck team and coordinating the students’ return to instruction,” the district said.

The Police Chief has said that no School Resource Officers have been assigned to Richneck. In addition, doors have been installed in classroom areas without one, and others have been repaired or replaced,” the district told CNN.

Following the announcement of her appointment Sunday, administrator Lynch sent an email to students’ families highlighting new protocols for the first day of full instruction.

Lynch asked families to send their children to school using their normal mode of transportation and to not bring a book bag since the school will provide clear bags for use on Monday.

The email says the school is limiting visitors during the first week of school to allow for staff to establish routines and procedures with students. Parents are not allowed to enter classrooms, anyone who chooses to walk their children to class must show identification, and they are also subject to search.

The school made public a list of emotional support items that had been requested by the teachers, along with a post on their Facebook account.

My son is still scared, that’s why I told CNN. “He wants to go back to school, but he just wants to know that he’s gonna to be safe, and that’s the biggest thing.”

The security measures at the school were failed and it ishorrifying that people know about it.

Zwerner’s chest was hit by a bullet that passed through one of her hands. The teacher has since been released from hospital.

“Over the course of a few hours, three different times – three times – school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him at the school and was threatening people,” attorney Diane Toscano told reporters.

After the shooting, the boy was placed under temporary detention order and was evaluated at a local hospital. He remains unidentified publicly, but his family has been releasing statements through their attorney.

The Denver Police Department is Trying to Find a Shooting Student with a Knife for a Class of Underage Students, as Pertained by a Denver High School

It is a crime in Virginia to leave a gun unattended and endanger a child under the age of 14. A person is not allowed to allow a child to use a firearm if he is under the age of 12.

The police were dispatched to the East High School at about 9:50 a.m. after the shooting was reported, and they found two adult men with gunshot wounds, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said.

“We are looking for the suspect,” Mayor Michael Hancock said. We will hold that suspect accountable for placing everyone in danger, as well as wounding two staff members who were trying to keep everyone safe, and we will also make sure he is held accountable for all the other things that he did this morning.

The mayor asked residents to look out for a student with an afro and wearing a hoodie. The student should be considered “armed and dangerous and willing to use the weapon, as we learned this morning,” the mayor said.

In addition, another student was taken to a hospital because of an allergic reaction, the mayor said. Paramedics were already in the building for that incident when the shooting occurred and so were able to immediately treat those wounded, Hancock said.

Opened in the late 1800s as the first high school in Denver, East High is considered to be one of the top schools in the city, according to Colorado Public Radio’s Ben Markus.

The high school is in the City Park neighborhood of Colorado’s capital, and it is considered a Denver Historic Landmark for its architecture that is Jacobethan Revival. The clock tower atop the school is similar in style to Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, the school website notes.

School officials will be implementing a “controlled release” of students once police allow, according to a tweet from Denver Public Schools. Students who commuted themselves will be escorted to their cars, students who ride the bus will be held on campus until their bus arrives, and students who are dropped off by a parent can be picked up from a separate location, the tweet says.

In September, two people were shot at a recreation center one block away. There were reports that an active shooter was on campus, but it was proved to be false a week later.

Hundreds of students were put in lock down, and two school administrators were injured, after a student opened fire at East High School.

The suspect was later identified as Austin, according to police. His car was found alongside a wooded road in nearby Park County on Wednesday evening, causing authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby areas.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office lifted the shelter-in-place order on Wednesday but it wasn’t until Thursday that the Coroner’s office confirmed the identity of the body.

Colorado Public Radio/Denverite reported that the administrators were Eric Sinclair and Jerald Mason. Sinclair is in a serious condition after surgery. The patient was discharged in a stable condition.

Police said administrators were shot at the front of the school while they were away from other students and that Lyle was searching for weapons.

The police did not respond to questions about how long the safety plan had been in place or what the incident was that led to it. They know the school didn’t find a weapon on him before.

According to the Colorado Public Radio/Denverite, a school district spokesman stated that Lyle had been expelled from a high school in a neighboring district for violating board policy.

The Denver public school system decided to remove armed school resource officers in 2020 because of their concerns over the treatment of young students of color.

“This should never — as a parent, I can tell you — never be a concern of a parent, whether or not their kids are safe in their building,” he said from the campus grounds on Wednesday, visibly shaken.
